Almost ten years after...

Soon, it will be 10 years after the day I drove my Honda CB 500 from Lisbon to Algarve and, in a couple of hours, arrived at Praia da Luz. There, I saw Gerry and Kate McCann, during a Press conference and took some pictures. One thing that made me curious was the elegant way they dressed – pink and blue shirts, a fashion style they would repeat many times in the following months.
My first impression, looking at Kate McCann (and I was very close, less than 2 meters...) was of a mother in deep suffering, missing a child that vanished just two weeks before. I wrote a comment about that in a online forum of a British newspaper (can't remember which one, but may be it was “The Sun”...) and I was almost lynched.

I went back home on May 25, 2007. Only after that I saw the amazing pictures of Gerry and Kate McCann getting out of the church, on Praia da Luz, smiling and laughing, as if they were celebrated something, and being greeted by a large supporting crowd – ONLY 9 DAYS after their little child disappeared. I compared their smiling faces that with the look of Filomena Teixeira, the mother of Rui Pedro, a 11 years old Portuguese child that disappeared on 1998 and I was shocked.

Then, at the end of June 2007, I found a interview of Gerry McCann to the “Daily Express” (1), talking about a event he was planning, some kind of musical event, with the help of a few big stars. So, exactly one month after Madeleine McCann disappeared, her father was making long term plans and talking about the first anniversary (????) of her disappearance: “We want a big event to raise awareness that she is still missing (…) It wouldn’t be a one-year anniversary, it will be sooner than that.”
If there is a God, I hope justice could be made, one day...

(1) Don't waist your time looking for this interview on the “Daily Express” site. It was deleted long ago, but several blogs and forums have it.

We can categorically deny...

Gerry's Blog/Diary - Day 250 - 08/01/2008

We are one week in to the New Year and we can definitely say the holiday period is well and truly over. Some of the media coverage today has been at its worst since Kate and I were declared arguidos. We can categorically deny that we are considering a movie about Madeleine’s disappearance. This is simply untrue. We are approached by a huge number of media outlets regarding a myriad of projects, only a tiny proportion of which we agree to. Each proposal is considered on whether it is likely to have a positive effect, either directly or indirectly on the search for Madeleine.

As stated today by Clarence, there was a preliminary discussion between a production agency and a representative of Kate and I to discuss the possibility of a documentary about the issues we have faced since Madeleine was abducted. Clearly Europe is a long way behind the USA in terms of its response when a child goes missing. Kate and I have opened all of the Christmas cards and many mass cards which have been for Madeleine. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us over the last eight months. We could not have got through this ordeal on our own and without doubt, Madeleine needs all our help

Who framed Kate MAcCann_

Between September 7 and 10, last year [2007], Kate McCann was fighting for her life, according to The News of the World, because Portuguese authorities were trying to frame her. "They want me to lie - I'm being framed”, Kate told the Sunday Mirror. The reason, she explained, was the fact that Polícia Judiciária was “running out of budget for this investigation and want it to end". Another reason, she said, was that Portuguese Police “don't want a murder in Portugal and all the publicity about them not having paedophile laws here, so they're blaming us."

The News of the World paid £125,000 to the fund supporting the searchfor Madeleine McCann as part of an apology for publishing Kate McCann's diaries – on condition that the terms of the deal remained secret.
The payment was made after the missing girl's parents expressed their outrage at the story, which Kate McCann said made her feel "mentally raped". All the parties involved in the negotiations over the payment, which was agreed in September 2008, were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement hiding the scale of the newspaper's culpability.

A short fight

Madeleine McCann's parents plan to stay in Portugal to prove their innocence after being named official suspects in the case, friends have toldthe BBC. Jon Corner, the McCann's twins godfacther, said Gerry and Kate McCann, both 39, were determined the search for their daughter would not be "derailed".
Mr Corner said the developments pointed to the "mindset of the Portuguese police. Clearly, they're not investigating or doing the detective work to find Madeleine," he said. "They're actually looking for a very quick, clean closure on the case, and that means turning their focus into the family."

Important child welfare associations

"Busy day- some very good phone calls with important child welfare organsations who we will be working closely with in the future (...) There has been a lot of media publicity over arrests in Spain tonight following information related to the investigation to find Madeleine. This appears to be a clear signal from European police forces that they are treating all information relating to Madeleines disappearance very seriously." - Gerry McCann, Day 56 - 28/06/2007 - Thursday
